it took me like 7 watches of this movie to realize that when Howl "meets" Sophie at the beginning and says "there you are sweetheart, sorry I'm late, I've been looking everywhere for you" isn't just him making up a story to get her out of a sticky situation with the guards, but it's an actual genuine statement because Sophie went back in time and met a younger Howl learning how to free him from his curse.
